Ghana's electricity sector debt exceeded $3 billion in January 2025, up from $2.1 billion in August 2017. Ghana is opting for a new fiscal mechanism

.

Information relayed on Sunday, June 8, by local media announces that Ghana intends to apply, as of Monday, June 16, a tax of 1 cedi (about 0.097 dollars) on each liter of fuel sold at the pump, under an agreement between fuel distributors and the tax authorities. This levy, itself provided for by current regulations, is intended to fund the reimbursement of energy debt, established in recent years due to late payments, poorly compensated subsidies and tariff imbalances. This tax is in addition to other levies already included in the fuel price, according to the local press. This contribution aims to improve the solvency of the sector, which is considered essential to reduce dependence on public funding, secure supply and attract new investments.
