Equity markets expected to decline after Wall Street stalled. The Eurostoxx 50 opened at 3,696.63 points (-0.76%), the CAC 40 at 6,368.40 points (-0.43%), the DAX 40 at 13,902.52 points (-0.49%), the FTSE 100 at 7,503.27 points (+0.13%), the SMI at 11,877.27 points (-0.02%), the AEX 696.19 points (-0.36%), the BEL 20 at 4,097.20 points (+0.78%), the S&P 500 at 4,146.87 points (-3.56%) and the Nikkei 225 at 26,963.43 points (+0.54%).
From the exchange rate side, the change from the close in New York indicates that EUR/USD at 1.0539 (-0.03%), EUR/JPY at 137.62 (+0.31%) and USD/JPY at 130.59 (+0.32%).
On Thursday evening, the insurer Axa confirmed its objectives after recording an increase in its turnover in the first quarter in an uncertain geopolitical context related to the conflict in Ukraine. The display advertising group announced a 50% jump in revenue in the first quarter and indicated that its growth would continue at a more moderate pace in the spring.
European equity markets are expected to open lower on Friday, but their decline is expected to be contained despite Wall Street's sharp pullback, which saw the Dow Jones and S&P 500 indices lose more than 3%. At 7:40 a.m., the CAC 40 futures contract gave up 14.9 points, or 0.2%, according to data from broker IG Markets. The CONTRACT on the DAX 40 lost 23.5 points, or 0.2%, and the contract on the FTSE 100 lost 24 points, or 0.3%.
On Friday, investors will look at Germany's industrial production figures, payroll employment figures in France and the U.S. non-agricultural payroll employment report. They will also be interested in speeches by Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic and San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly. In Asia, markets are down sharply on Friday, with the exception of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, which is gaining ground for its first session of the week. At the end of the session, the Hang Seng index fell 3.6% in Hong Kong and the Shanghai Composite gave up 2.3%. On the other hand, the Nikkei index was up 0.7%.
The New York Stock Exchange more than erased its gains from the previous day on Thursday, after initially welcoming the Federal Reserve's (Fed) less restrictive tone than expected regarding interest rate developments. The Dow Jones index fell 1,063 points, losing more than 1,000 points in one session for the first time since the beginning of the health crisis in 2020.
U.S. Treasury yields rose Friday morning, with the 10-year yield standing at 3.065% from 2.916% late Thursday. During Thursday's session, yields reached their highest levels since late 2018.
The euro is almost stable on Friday morning against the dollar but is gaining ground against the yen, like the greenback. Worries about the economic outlook and inflation are benefiting the dollar, which could rise further on Friday if risk aversion persists, jeff Ng, currency analyst at MUFG.
Oil contracts continue to rise on Friday, after a volatile session on Thursday that saw oil prices close at their highest levels in nearly three weeks. At 7:25 a.m., the July contract for North Sea Brent gained 37 cents to $111.27 a barrel and the June contract for Nymex-listed light sweet crude (WTI) gained 35 cents to $108.61 a barrel.
