During the annual meeting of the National Customer Dialogue Committee (Cndc) held on Thursday, July 31, in Dakar, the National Electricity Company of Senegal (Senelec) alerts on a plague that weakens the entire electrical system and calls for citizen mobilization.

The data revealed during the meeting mentions losses estimated at 1,406,077.85 megawatts for the year 2024, due to acts of fraud, in particular illegal connections and illegal meter manipulations. Electricity theft is thus a persistent scourge with serious consequences for the energy sector. This energy damage represents a “colossal” financial loss of around 100 billion CFA francs. This situation weakens the economic viability of the network and compromises the quality of service for customers in good standing. Thierno Oumar Kane, secretary general of Senelec, painted a blunt picture: “Those who steal electricity also steal public money. And honest customers are paying the price.” He said that this widespread fraud not only threatens Senelec's financial balance, but also damages the quality of service, pricing equity and long-term investment projects

.

Face à cette menace persistante, la Senelec has been implementing an intensive anti-fraud plan for several months now, by based on a strengthened legal arsenal, joint operations with law enforcement and judicial authorities and the mobilization of its internal teams
