Beyond the short term, climate change is having a negative structural impact on agricultural productivity in many countries. In a joint statement on the global food security crisis, leaders from five major international institutions set out four points for urgent action to address the global food security crisis. These are the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank Group, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and WFP.

“To avoid further setbacks in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, short- and long-term actions need to be taken in four key areas: the providing immediate assistance to vulnerable people, facilitating trade and international food supplies, stimulating production, and investing in climate-resilient agriculture,” the statement reads.
