At the end of the summit of West African heads of state held this Sunday, July 3 in Accra, the majority of economic and financial sanctions against Mali were ; suppressed.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) decided last Sunday to reopen the land and air borders as well as the validation of the new timetable proposed by the junta for the transitional period. Some measures have been lifted, namely: the freezing of Malian assets and those of public and semi-public companies at the BCEAO and the blocking of transfers from the Malian State through the payment systems of the same central bank. However, individual sanctions against the ruling junta and administrative sanctions against Mali have not been lifted. Thus, the participation of the transitional authorities in the next election will not be appropriate.

The summit also saw nominations. As a result, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, the Head of State of Guinea-Bissau, became current President of ECOWAS, while the Gambian diplomat Omar Alieu Touray, former Minister of Foreign Affairs res, has taken over the leadership of the Commission, the organization's executive body, an appointment that will take effect on 11 July next year. He will replace Jean-Claude Brou, who was recently appointed head of the BCEAO. Patrice Talon, the President of Benin, est nommé “Champion of ECOWAS” for the return of cultural goods in West Africa, and Nana Akufo-Addo “champion for the fight against climate change”.
