A report published by the minister's office indicated that during a meeting in Abidjan, Nigeria and Cameroon expressed interest in joining the alliance for economic relations on cocoa between Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. This ambition was expressed by the respective representatives of Nigeria and Cameroon, who addressed the Steering Committee of the Cocoa Initiative Côte d'Ivoire-Ghana (CIGCI). The meeting was chaired by Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Ghanaian Prime Minister of Food and Agriculture.

CIGCI aims to harmonize the cocoa trade strategies of the two countries Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana in order to improve cocoa farmers' incomes in the wake of cocoa prices still low on the global market. It is an initiative put in place following a declaration by the Presidents of Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana.

For Nigeria and Cameroon, joining the initiative will strengthen the alliance's efforts to offer a better price and then better remuneration to cocoa producers. Dr. Akoto said CIGCI would guide potential members through established processes for admitting new members.
