The National Agency for Statistics and Demography has released import data for the month of May 2022. These figures indicate that imports are valued at 564.2 billion FCFA compared with 544.3 billion FCFA in April, an increase of 3.7%.

The increase in imports is mainly due to foreign purchases of maize (21.6 billion FCFA compared to 0.9 billion FCFA the previous month), animal oils and fats, and veg& veg&g acute; tales (13.2 billion CFA against 6.2 billion FCFA), wheat and meslin (24.8 billion FCFA against 15.4 billion FCFA), base metals (21.6 billion FCFA against 18.7 billion FCFA) and machinery and equipment for non-food industries (26.5 billion FCFA against 16.5 billion FCFA).

The main products imported during the period under review were finished petroleum products, other machinery and equipment, machinery and equipment for non-food industries, wheat and meslin and maize. Senegal's main suppliers were Belgium (9.2%), France (8.5%), Russia (7.3%), Argentina (7.0%) and China (6.8%). The trade balance stood at -260.7 billion FCFA in the month of May 2022 compared with -312.3 billion FCFA in the previous month.
