The French presidency said Sunday that the country is in favor of setting a "maximum oil price" at the level of "producer countries". This proposal aims to counter the price surge caused by the war in Ukraine.

The statement made on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Germany suggests that a ceiling be set by the producing countries themselves. The other G7 countries seem rather dubious, as the measure comes up against the reality of an oil market where the price is set according to world supply and demand. On the other hand, the possibility of imposing a ceiling price on Russian oil exports could be successful, if China and India are in favour.

For its part, the United States intends to impose a maximum sales price threshold because of the surge in gasoline prices to historic levels. But the G7 leaders have indicated that this is a complex measure to implement.
