The National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) of Morocco announced on Friday the opening of a call for tenders for the award of licenses for the deployment and operation of 5G network services.

The Moroccan government projects gradual coverage reaching 25% of the population by the end of 2025 or 2026, to reach 70% by 2030, the year in which Morocco will co-organize the World Cup with Spain and Portugal by 2030, the year in which Morocco will co-organize the World Cup with Spain and Portugal. Two national operators, Maroc Telecom and Inwi (Wana Corporate), signed a strategic agreement in March to create two joint ventures called FiberCo and TowerCo. The plan called for an estimated investment of 4.4 billion dirhams (about $475 million) over three years, in order to deploy fiber optics to subscribers and to build up to 6,000 telecommunications antennas by 2033

The launch of 5G will primarily target major urban areas, economic clusters, industrial clusters and innovation centers, before progressing to less densely populated territories. Cities hosting sports competitions will benefit from complete coverage by 2030.

The strategy is part of the “Digital Morocco 2030" plan, which aims to provide the country with robust digital infrastructures. According to an intervention by the delegated ministry in charge of the digital transition, around 6,300 public administrations must be fiberized by 2026, then 5.6 million households by 2030.
