Zimbabwe's major platinum miners, including Valterra Platinum, Zimplats, and Mimosa, are still waiting for millions of dollars in export payments as new currency rules delay government regulations.

The world's third-largest producer of platinum group metals, behind neighboring South Africa and Russia, Zimbabwe says it needs foreign currency to finance vital imports and repay its debts abroad. Platinum producers in Zimbabwe, including Valterra Platinum, Zimplats (a subsidiary of Impala Platinum) and Mimosa (a joint venture between Impala and Sibanye Stillwater), exported $690 million worth of PGM mattes and concentrates in the first half of this year, according to

government data.

However, the government has not paid miners the local currency equivalent of their export earnings since January, a Chamber of Mines official told Reuters.

Deputy Finance Minister Kuda Mnangagwa confirmed that the state was behind schedule in paying minors.

“There were cash flow problems, especially in the first quarter of the year when our tax revenues were at their lowest,” Mnangagwa told Reuters on Tuesday.

He added that the government was in discussions with platinum producers to “ensure that these delays do not affect their operations.”
