Dakar, Feb 28 (APS) - Transactions via e-money accounts in the ECOWAS area grew by 16.04 % in value between the second half of 2018 and the first half of 2019, reveals the half-yearly monitoring report on e-money-backed payment services - June 2019.
"In the first half of 2019, the number of transactions via electronic money accounts stood at 583.36 million representing an amount of 6,203.20 billion CFA francs against 430.74 million transactions for a value of 5,345.90 billion CFA francs in the second half of 2018 (...)", specifies this report of the BCEAO.
This increase is 35.43% in volume and 16.04% in value, details the document.
It stresses that this increase recorded at the level of all operators reflects "the continued adherence of populations to payment services backed by electronic money and is explained by the strengthening of distribution networks deployed in the Union by EMEs [electronicq currency institutions]".
The report indicates that at the end of March 2019, "intra-WAEMU transactions recorded an increase of 10.79% in volume and 29.50% in value, or 2.93 million transactions estimated at 156.12 billion CFA francs".
By way of comparison, there were 2.41 million transfers totalling 120.56 billion CFA francs at the end of December 2018.
According to statistics, at the end of June 2019, Côte d'Ivoire remains the main issuer of transfers with 61.60% of the total value of sub-regional transactions, while Burkina Faso is positioned as the main receiver with 54.28% of transfers.
Over the period under review, the distribution of the value of intra-WAEMU transfers shows that the following corridors account for more than 79.47% of operations : Côte d'Ivoire-Burkina Faso (51.62%), Côte d'Ivoire-Mali (17.42%), Mali-Burkina Faso (10.43%).
