A high-level mission led by Goodluck Jonathan, former Nigerian President and mediator of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in the Malian political crisis, stayed in Bamako from 5 to 7 September 2021. This visit is part of the implementation of the recommendations of the ECOWAS Assembly of Heads of State and Government held on 19 June 2021 in Accra for a follow-up of the management of the transition.

The objective of the delegation was to assess the transition process and particularly the progress in the preparation of the elections scheduled to be held in February 2022, in accordance with the deadline granted by the Assembly of Heads of State and Ecowas Government at its Extraordinary Session of 15 September 2020. It also aims to provide ECOWAS support in the effective implementation of the priority actions included in the Government's action plan. Thus, the delegation paid a courtesy call on the President of the Transition, Colonel Assimi Goita and held a working session with Choguel Maiga, Prime Minister of the Transition surrounded by several members of the Government. It also held consultations with members of the Local Monitoring Committee and members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Mali. The delegation held talks with the Living Forces of the Nation, namely political actors, signatories of the Algiers Agreement, civil society organizations and religious leaders. At the end of the exchanges, the mission appreciated the renewed expression of the transitional authorities to respect the agreed period of the transition before the international community. However, the delegation indicated in its final communiqué the lack of concrete actions in the effective preparation of the electoral process. The mission recalled the importance of respecting the consensus on the legal framework to be used for the elections, the preparation of the electoral list, and the choice of the body or bodies to conduct the elections.
