The Angolan state is coming to the rescue of TAAG Angola Airlines with a major recapitalization operation. The government announced the allocation of 170 billion kwanzas, or approximately $186 million, in the form of Treasury bonds, to strengthen the company's financial structure and secure its commitments.

According to an official statement, this intervention does not take the form of a direct cash injection. It relies on the issuance of public debt transferred to TAAG, a mechanism already used in 2023, when 115 billion kwanzas (approximately $116 million) were mobilized to support the national carrier.

This new operation comes amidst a particularly strained financial context for the airline. In 2024, TAAG reported losses of 134.2 billion kwanzas ($135.5 million), further exacerbating a situation already weakened by negative equity.

In response to these difficulties, management initiated emergency cost-containment measures in early 2026. These include a temporary hiring freeze and strict control over operational expenses.

Through this recapitalization, Angolan authorities seek to stabilize their national airline, considered a strategic player in air transport, while providing it with the means to meet its financial obligations in an ever-uncertain environment.
