On the occasion of the extraordinary session held last Saturday in Guinea-Bissau, the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) announced the lifting of Mali's suspension from its organs and institutions.

The decision taken by UEMOA in January 2022 to punish the junta's intention to remain in power for several more years has been lifted. “With respect to Mali, the Conference decided to lift its suspension of UEMOA bodies and institutions taken on 9 January 2022,” the statement said

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and UEMOA imposed a battery of vigorous economic and diplomatic measures against Mali in January 2022 to punish the junta's intention to remain in power for five years.

ECOWAS lifted trade and financial sanctions in July 2022, validating the new timetable proposed by the junta for a transition period until March 2024.
