Cash transfers from Senegalese expatriates in 2019 are estimated at 1.393 billion CFA francs. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance and Budget notes a "slight increase" on the amount of the previous year. According to the Central Bank of West African States (Bceao), quoted by Abdoulaye Samb, the sums of money sent in 2019 to their relatives by Senegalese living abroad represent 10.1% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) and are much larger than the cumulation of foreign direct investment and that of official development assistance funds received by Senegal. " The BCEAO's estimates place these transfers in quasi-stability, or even slightly up ," he added during a videoconference given on the occasion of senegal's Balance of Payments and External Accounts Dissemination Day.
Abdoulaye Samb stressed that Senegal owes this favourable financial situation to the "excellent performance" of its "secondary incomes", especially migrant remittances, which have helped mitigate the impact of the trade deficit, negative balances and primary incomes, according to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance and Budget. In 2019, Senegal's net foreign investment amounted to 583 billion CFA francs and represented 4.2% of the country's GDP. The structural current account deficit remains sustainable for the time being.
