The mobile sector in 2024 contributed almost 220 billions of dollars to the African economy, which represents 7.7% of the continent's GDP, according to the 2025 GSMA report “The Mobile Economy in Africa 2025”.

The main economic benefits of mobile telephony comes from productivity gains, estimated at 120 billions of dollars, followed by the direct contribution of the sector, which rises to 60 billion dollars. These numbers were driven by the rise in power of 5G, with strong adoption observed in South Africa, in The Reunion and Botswana. The report also indicates that by 2030, this figure is expected to increase to $270 billion, or 7.4% of GDP. This Expected increase is the result of productivity and efficiency gains resulting from the steady development of mobile services and adoption increasing number of digital technologies, including 5G, IoT, and AI.
