In an interview, the executive secretary of National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), Kamar Bakrin, reported that Nigeria was on the way to self-sufficiency in domestic production of sugar.

The NSDC executive secretary said that the stakeholder response to its producer development program of sugar cane (SODP), recently launched, is concrete for the growth of the country's sugar industry. He indicates that the strong interest aroused by the program shows growing confidence in the efforts made to stimulate local sugar production.

According to him, the SODP integrates farmers into Nigeria's sugar value chain through outflow agreements guaranteed, access to quality cane seeds, inputs and technical support.
