As the main raw materials exported by WAEMU countries, over the same period, prices fell for cashew nuts (-58.3%), cotton (-19.6%) and coffee (-14.4%). On the other hand, prices are trending upwards for gold (+35.1%), rubber (+20.8%) and cocoa (+19.9%). As regards the main food products imported by the countries of the Union, their prices rose at an annual rate, by 8.7% in January 2020. In terms of monetary policy, the main central banks kept their key interest rates unchanged during the month of January 2020. International stock market indices saw year-on-year increases at the end of January 2020. The most significant increases were recorded in the Nasdaq Composite (25.7%), the Standard & Poor's 500 (+19.3%), the CAC 40 (+16.3%), the DAX (+16.2%), the Dow Jones (+13.0%) and the Nikkei 225 (+11.7%). On the foreign exchange market, the European currency depreciated at an annual rate against the pound sterling (-3.9%), the US dollar (-3.8%), the Japanese yen (-3.6%) and the Chinese yuan (-0.4%).
