With a modern contraceptive prevalence rate of 12% in 2012, Senegal jumped to 27.7% in 2020. That is an increase of 2 percentage points per year.

“A spectacular result which places Senegal among the champion countries in West Africa. Certainly a step forward. However, the CPR level shows that about 3 out of 10 Senegalese women have access to a modern contraceptive method of their choice. This means that the country must still mobilize partnerships and additional resources to improve this indicator,” said the representative of UNFPA-Senegal, Cécile Compaoré Zoungrana, this Monday, December 21 in Saly (Mbour).

It was during the opening ceremony of the Workshop for consultation, awareness and consolidation of the Action Plan for the mobilization of domestic resources for family planning (FP) in Senegal, organized by the Management Maternal and Child Health (DSME) and funded by UNFPA/WARCO.

This meeting is held near the end of the Family Planning 2020 Initiative, a global partnership of 69 countries, sealed in 2012. The said initiative aims to extend access to family planning to 120 million additional women by 2020. .

Despite the spectacular progress that has been made, enormous challenges remain, according to Cécile Compaoré Zoungrana. These, she said, include the lack of financial resources and the reduction of unmet needs in FP, which currently stand at more than 20%.

“The mobilization of financial resources in order to make products available up to the last mile to reach the most isolated or remote direct beneficiaries is also a challenge to be met, since Senegal continues to depend on external funding, in this concerning the purchase of contraceptives," she said.
