France: An exceptional summer

Ukrainian counteroffensive in the south: An IAEA mission to Zaporizhzhia
A counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces and intensive Russian bombardment, southern Ukraine remained at the heart of the conflict overnight from Monday to Tuesday, while UN experts are expected at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission must inspect the power plant, the largest in Europe, occupied since the beginning of March by the Russians and at the center of all tensions. The Ukrainian counterattack is mainly aimed at retaking Kherson, a city - of 280,000 inhabitants before the conflict - that fell into Russian hands as soon as the war began on 24 February, local officials said.

Pakistan: More than 1,130 deaths due to rains
Tens of millions of Pakistanis continue to struggle with the worst monsoon rains in three decades, which have killed at least 1,136 people, swept away countless homes, and destroyed vital agricultural land. A third of Pakistan is currently “under water,” Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman said in an interview with AFP on Monday, calling it a “crisis of unimaginable proportions.”
The monsoon rains, which began in June, are “unprecedented in 30 years”, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif pointed out, as he travelled through the affected regions in the north while, in the south, the country's main river, the Indus, is threatening to emerge.

Baghdad: Chaos in the Green Zone creates at least 15 deaths
Mortar shells and automatic weapons fire: Baghdad's Green Zone has descended into chaos after the political “withdrawal” of Moqtada Sadr, a coup announced Monday by the Shiite Iraqi leader giving free rein to his supporters, at least fifteen of whom were shot dead. Late in the evening, heavy automatic weapons fire and explosions were heard from this ultra-secure perimeter, which houses ministries and embassies. According to a security source, the Peace Brigades, an armed group under the orders of Moqtada Sadr, were targeting the Green Zone from the outside. Inside were army special forces and a unit of Hashd al-Shaabi, former pro-Iran paramilitaries integrated into Iraqi forces, fighting back.
