Kiev wins the battle over the European oil embargo, Russia increases pressure in Donbass
Kiev won the battle of the European oil embargo, which was supposed to drain funding for Moscow's “war machine”, but Russian forces continued to concentrate on Tuesday in eastern Ukraine, particularly around the key city of Severodonetsk in Donbass. During the night of Monday to Tuesday, the 27 member countries of the European Union agreed on a gradual embargo. Initially, it will involve oil transported by ship, representing two-thirds of European purchases of Russian black gold. A temporary exemption has been provided for oil transported by pipeline, in order to lift Budapest's veto. “This will cut off a huge source of funding for Russia's war machine,” tweeted European Council President Charles Michel.
The extension of the embargo to pipeline deliveries will then be discussed “as soon as possible” and, in total, 90% of Russian oil exports to the EU will be stopped by the end of the year, said the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron. Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky questioned Europeans about their need to face Moscow in a video message broadcast during the extraordinary summit in Brussels.

A French journalist working for the BFMTV channel was killed in Ukraine on Monday and his colleague injured while accompanying civilians on board a humanitarian bus, bringing to eight the number of reporters killed since the start of the Russian invasion. “Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff, a journalist, was in Ukraine to show the reality of the war. On board a humanitarian bus, alongside civilians forced to flee to escape Russian bombs, he was fatally wounded,” President Emmanuel Macron wrote on Twitter. The French National Anti-Terror Prosecutor has announced the opening of a judicial investigation for “war crimes”, after the death of Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff and the injury of the journalist Maxime Brandstaetter, who accompanied him.
