Storms: five deaths counted in Corsica

Hit by deadly storms, Corsica is experiencing another night of bad weather. According to Meteo-France in a bulletin broadcast overnight, “generalized thunderstorms” affect “the western half of Corsica and Cap Corsica” but also “the eastern coastline”. “Storms continue to form at sea and will affect a large part of the western coastline of Corsica” overnight. Thus, during the night of Thursday to Friday, five deaths were noted.

"Under the strongest storm cells, 40 to 60 mm can be observed in less than an hour, hail, strong wind gusts of around 80 to 100 km/h”, according to Métro-France, which also warns against “sea storms and swirling phenomena” on the coast. The Mediterranean island, where the tourist season is in full swing, went back to orange alert at 21:00 on Thursday, for a rain-storm episode that was “more sustainable” than the day before.

UN warning for Ukraine: “damaging the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant would be “suicide””

During a meeting in Lviv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the UN Secretary-General warned on Thursday that any damage to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine would be a “suicide”, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he feared a “new Chernobyl.” “We have to say it like it is: any potential damage to Zaporizhzhia would be suicide,” said Antonio Guterres, calling once again to “demilitarize” the power plant, which is occupied by the Russian army. Saying he was “gravely concerned” by the situation in Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Guterres called for it not to be used “for any military operation whatsoever.”

United States: One of IS's “Beatles” faces life imprisonment

El Shafee El-Sheikh, a member of the cruel “Beatles” of the Islamic State (IS) jihadi group, a cell specializing in the capture, torture, and execution of Western hostages, is due to be sentenced Friday in an American court. He faces life imprisonment for the murder of four Americans.

El Shafee El-Sheikh, 34, was arrested by Syrian Kurdish forces in 2018. He has since been found guilty in April by a popular jury, after a harrowing trial that exposed the sadism of the “Beatles”. A jury of 12 people deliberated less than six hours over two days before finding him guilty for his role in the deaths of the four Americans, journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff as well as aid workers Peter Kassig and Kayla Mueller.

iPhone, iPad, and Mac: Apple warns of a security breach

According to Apple, in the old version of the operating system, “an application can use arbitrary code” with undue access to the device, which means that an attacker can perform actions without authorization.

For example, Apple recommended that owners of certain iPhone, iPad, and Mac models update the operating software, which has a security vulnerability that allows them to take control of these devices. Affected are iPhone 6 and later models, all iPad Pro, 5th generation and later iPads, and Macs, according to notices posted on Apple's site. “This possibility may have been actively exploited” by hackers, Apple said, without giving further details.

Several families trapped since Wednesday in a bus near a zoo in Algeria. Firefighters managed to control most of the fires that killed at least 38 people on Thursday evening.

Nearly half of the world's cancers are attributable to a given risk factor, primarily tobacco and alcohol, concludes a gigantic study published Friday, stressing the importance of preventive measures without making them a panacea.

The organizers of the 2022 World Cup ran 1,300 buses on the streets of Doha on Thursday to simulate life-size public transport through this small Gulf state, which is preparing for a logistical challenge, with suddenly more than a million visitors.
