Last night, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva returned to Brasilia to see the massive damage in the Presidential Palace ransacked by supporters of his far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro. Congress and the Supreme Court have also been affected.
The left-wing president, who has only been in office for a week, is already facing a major crisis. He deplored events that were “unprecedented in the history of Brazil.” Flavio Dino, his Minister of Justice and Public Security, assured that the places of power had been completely evacuated and more than 200 people arrested. These ransacks provoked an avalanche of outraged reactions around the world. They recall the assault on Congress in Washington by Donald Trump supporters in January 2021. US President Joe Biden called the violence “scandalous.”
Soccer: Noël Le Graët draws the ire of Kylian Mbappé and the Minister of Sport
The president of the French Football Federation Noël Le Graët did not spare the legend of Les Bleus Zidane on Sunday. He thus drew the ire of Kylian Mbappé and the Minister of Sports. And there is a risk of making his case even worse just before being heard by the audit mission on the dysfunctions at the FFF. Indeed, the French star Kylian Mbappé reacted on Twitter, “Zidane, it's France, we don't disrespect the legend like that.” Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castera tweeted in turn, “Declarations:again off the ground with a bonus this time a shameful lack of respect, which offends us all, & agrave; a soccer and sports legend: a president of the first sports federation in France should not say that. Apologies for saying too much about Z.Zidane please.”
Paris Court of Appeal: a Mediator appeal trial opens
The appeal trial for the Mediator health scandal begins on Monday for six months before the Paris Court of Appeal. The drug from Servier Laboratories is accused of causing the death of hundreds of patients. Mediator was marketed as an anti-diabetic in 1976 but was wrongly prescribed as an appetite suppressant until 2009. It has caused serious side effects on thousands of patients with cardiac or pulmonary pathologies and sometimes led to their death. Servier Laboratories and their former number 2, Jean-Philippe Seta, were found guilty of aggravated deception and unintentional homicides and injuries at first instance. Thus, Servier was fined 2.7 million euros, and Mr. Seta was given four years of suspended prison and a fine of 90,600 euros. In addition, the group was ordered to pay a total of more than 183 million euros in damages to the victims. Only the Servier and Jean-Philippe Seta groups will be judged before the Court of Appeal.
