Brasil: thousands of natives march to the Supreme Court for their lands

Mouts of indigenous people in traditional dress demonstrated Wednesday in Brasilia where the Supreme Court was due to issue a crucial ruling on their ancestral lands. Some 6,000 members of 170 tribes, many wearing feather headdresses and brandishing bows and arrows, left for the seat of Brazil's highest court, hoping to put pressure on its eleven judges. This is the largest indigenous event ever held in Brazil, according to the Association of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib), which is coordinating the mobilization. Since Sunday, thousands of indigenous people with often painted bodies have pitched tents, singing and dancing near the modernist buildings of the presidential palace, the Supreme Court and parliament. These shimmering rallies are being held for the time being in peace, as organizers have called on protesters not to confront riot police. In June, similar protests escalated. Three protesters were injured, as well as three policemen, by arrows. The court postponed its judgment on these ancestral lands until Thursday at the earliest, as discussion on another case dragged on Wednesday, the court said.
