Ukraine: Mariupol fighters make a desperate appeal, Kiev receives fighter jets
Ukraine has been given fighter jets to help counter the Russian offensive in the east of the country, where the last Ukrainian fighters entrenched in Mariupol have made a desperate appeal to the international community to be rescued. "We may be living our last days, or even our last hours," said a commander of besieged Ukrainian soldiers in Mariupol, a strategic port in southeastern Ukraine, which Moscow has vowed to take control of. "The enemy is ten times more numerous than us," Serguiy Volyna, of the 36th Brigade of the French Navy, said on Facebook. "We call and beg all world leaders to help us. We ask them to use the extraction procedure and take us to the territory of a third country."
Russia, for its part, claims to have opened a corridor supposed to allow Ukrainian forces that have decided to surrender to leave Mariupol. On Tuesday evening, however, the Russian army lamented that "nobody" had used this humanitarian corridor. The latter will be reopened again on Wednesday from 11:00 GMT, according to the same source.
Israeli raids on Gaza after rocket fire, meeting at UN
The Israeli Air Force has carried out strikes against the Gaza Strip, the first in three months, in retaliation for a rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave, amid an escalation in recent weeks.  Five European countries said in a joint statement that "violence must stop immediately" and "the status quo of the holy sites must be fully respected." Early in the morning, the Israeli army claimed to have bombed an arming site of Hamas, an armed Islamist movement in power in the Gaza Strip, a poor territory where about 2.3 million Palestinians live under Israeli blockade. There were no casualties from the strikes.
  The raids followed a rocket fire Monday night from Gaza into neighboring southern Israel. The rocket was nevertheless intercepted by the Israeli missile shield. The violence comes amid ongoing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, compounded by four attacks in Israel between March 22 and April 7, which killed a total of 14 people.
