End of the Nice attack trial on Monday: verdict expected on Tuesday
After more than three months of hearings, the Nice attack trial ends this morning with the defendants' last words before the Paris Special Assize Court withdrew to deliberate. The verdict is expected on Tuesday.
President Laurent Raviot must, as provided for by the procedure, give the floor to the seven defendants present from 09:30. An eighth is judged in his absence, before closing the debates. The special court will then retreat to an undisclosed location in the Paris region before returning to the Grand Trials Chamber of the Palais de Justice in Paris on Tuesday to announce its verdict. It is composed of five professional judges and their four substitutes.
The Tunisian Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, author of the truck attack that killed 86 people including 15 children and injured more than 450 on the evening of 14 July 2016 on the Promenade des Anglais, was shot dead by the police at the end of his deadly race. This was largely absent from the trial even though his name has been mentioned at every hearing since 5 September. None of the eight people tried are tried for complicity with the killer.
Corruption: Greek Vice President of the European Parliament jailed
In an investigation by a Belgian judge into large payments allegedly made by Qatar to influence decisions within this major EU institution, the Greek vice-president of the European Parliament Eva Kaili was indicted for “corruption” in Brussels, and imprisoned.
The same judicial source explained that Kaili was not able to benefit from parliamentary immunity because the offence with which he is accused was found “in flagrante delicto”.
The same source confirmed press reports that “bags of cash” were discovered in the apartment of the socialist elected official.
Return to Earth: NASA's Orion spaceship landed in the Pacific Ocean on Sunday
NASA's Orion spacecraft landed in the Pacific Ocean on Sunday, after spending just over 25 days in space and traveling around the Moon. It is the final stage of a successful mission, and heralds the return of humans to the Moon in the years to come. During a press conference, Mike Sarafin, who is in charge of this mission at NASA, Artemis 1, welcomed himself with these words “I think that none of us could have imagined a more successful mission”. “We now have a means of transport to deep space”.
The capsule did not have an astronaut on board for this test flight. It entered the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of 40,000 km/h, and had to withstand a hell of 2,800degC, half the temperature of the Sun's surface.
Greening industrial imports: the EU finalises the terms of a new mechanism
On Monday, the EU finalizes the modalities of an unprecedented mechanism, which must also mark the end of the free “pollution rights” granted to European manufacturers. This is with the aim of greening industrial imports by charging for carbon emissions linked to their production. The idea is to avoid, with the rise in the price per ton of CO2, “ecological dumping” that would see manufacturers relocate their production outside Europe, while encouraging the rest of the world to adopt European standards.
In reality, the popular term “carbon tax” is misleading. It is not really a tax, but rather a “adjustment” at the borders (“CBAM” in English) which consists of applying to imports the criteria of the European carbon market, where EU manufacturers are required to buy “pollution rights”.
