End of gasoline cars, import taxation, carbon market reform at the risk of increasing fuel prices... Brussels has worked to reassure on the social impact of its vast climate plan, under the crossfire of NGOs and companies. The dozen or so texts unveiled by the European executive will be the subject of bitter discussions between MEPs and member states for at least a year, but the social consequences of some proposals are worrying, raising the spectre of the French "yellow vests" movement. In particular, Brussels wants to introduce an unprecedented tax on air kerosene for flights in the EU, and ban all marketing of petrol cars from 2035, with a boost to install charging points for electric vehicles. Both sectors reacted strongly. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has denounced "punitive measures" and European companies fear a "distortion of competition", while European car manufacturers (ACEA) have slammed "an unrational solution".

Children's vaccination: UN sounds alarm on 'absolute catastrophe' risk
The UN sounded the alarm on Thursday about a risk of "absolute catastrophe" if the dangerous delay in vaccinating children due to the Covid-19 pandemic is not made up and if health restrictions are lifted too quickly. The pandemic has forced to divert resources and personnel to the fight against Covid, many care services have had to close or reduce their hours. People have also been reluctant to move for fear of becoming infected, when lockdown measures did not prohibit them from doing so.
