The Taliban say they have control of all of Afghanistan, claiming to have brought down the Panchir Valley where local resistance leader Ahmad Massoud has called for rising up against them. This landlocked and hard-to-reach valley, 80 km north of Kabul, was the last hotbed of armed opposition to the Taliban, who seized power on August 15 thanks to a lightning military campaign, two weeks before the departure of the last foreign troops. A longtime anti-Taliban stronghold, Panchir, which legendary commander Ahmed Shah Massoud helped make famous in the late 1980s before being assassinated by al-Qaeda in 2001, is home to the National Resistance Front (NRF).
