Equity markets should struggle to orient themselves at the beginning of the session. The Eurostoxx 50 opened at 3,677.10 points (+0.81%), the CAC 40 at 6,298.64 points (+0.73%), the DAX 40 at 14,007.93 points (+0.63%), the FTSE 100 at 7,522.75 points (+0.51%), the IBEX 35 at 8,760.20 points (+1.49%), the DJIA at 32,120.28 points (+0.60%), the Nasdaq at 11,434.74 points (+1.51%), the S&P 500 at 3,978.73 points (+0.95%) and the Nikkei 225 at 26,638.79.80 points (-0.15%).
Regarding exchange rates, the change from the close in New York indicates that EUR/USD stood at 1.0703 (+0.21%), EUR/JPY at 136.38 (+0.32%) and USD/JPY at 127.43 (+0.11%).
The media and communication group Vivendi announced on Wednesday that it held 55.4% of Lagardère's capital at the end of the first period of its takeover bid that ended on May 20. The offer will be reopened from May 27 to June 9 at a price of €25 per share.
European equity markets may struggle to find momentum on Thursday morning, as investors are caught between the Federal Reserve's (Fed)'s slightly less restrictive message and ongoing concerns about inflation and global growth. Around 7:40 a.m., the CAC 40 futures contract lost 5.3 points, or 0.1%, according to data from broker IG Markets. The contract on the DAX 40 was down 16 points, or 0.1%, and the FTSE 100 contract was down 10 points, or 0.1% also.
Meanwhile, the U.S. tech sector experienced another disappointment on Wednesday after the close. Chipmaker Nvidia has released a worse-than-expected outlook for its quarter ending in July, citing the impact of the reduction in its business in Russia and Covid-19-related production shutdowns in China. The stock lost 6.8% in post-market trading. In Asia, markets are trading in a contrasting fashion on Thursday morning, after wall street's modest advance. At the end of the session, the Nikkei index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 0.2%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was down 0.1% and the Shanghai Composite was up 0.7%.
U.S. Treasury yields move little on Thursday morning, as the Fed's reaction to the minutes is muted. The report showed that some central bankers were concerned about how the Treasury bond market, the backbone of the global credit system, might react to rising interest rates.
The euro is gaining some ground on Thursday morning against the dollar and the yen. The greenback is also up slightly against the Japanese currency. "We remain optimistic about the dollar. In the long run, all the factors working in its favor will remain," said Scott Petruska of Silicon Valley Bank. The latter cites the expectation of a sharp tightening of the Fed's monetary policy in the coming months, attractive bond yields and favorable economic conditions with a tight labor market.
Oil contracts are rising Thursday morning, after the U.S. Department of Energy announced the day before a decline in U.S. crude oil and gasoline inventories in the week ending May 20. ahead of the summer season when Americans are increasing their car travel. At 7:20 a.m., the July contract for North Sea Brent was up 52 cents, at $114.54 a barrel. The same maturity on light sweet crude (WTI) listed on the Nymex was up 63 cents, to $ 110.95 per barrel.
