The Directorate General of Taxes (DGI) of the Maradi region through its director, Boubacar Mahamadou announced during a meeting with local economic actors that "95% of tax declarations and VAT collections are false”.

The Maradi region is supposed to be the largest contributor to the tax base in the opinion of many experts. With a per capita income of CFAF 172,844 in 2014, according to the indications of the economic and social development plan (PDES), economic activity in Maradi remains dominated by the informal sector.
For Boubacar Mahamadou, this situation makes the region a “tax desert” with 95% of tax declarations and VAT collections that are false. To this end, the regional coordinator of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Abdou Hassane, recommends the strengthening of awareness actions towards economic operators in order to change the trend.
