U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen gave an anti-bitcon speech on Monday, February 22, 2021. These words have helped to push back the price of bitcoin. After reaching a new record of more than $58,000 on Sunday, bitcoin found itself around $52,700 on Monday, a drop of 9%. According to Janet Yellen, bitcoin "is an extremely inefficient way to conduct transactions and the amount of energy consumed to process these transactions is staggering." Asked by the New York Times, she said, "I don't think bitcoin [...] be widely used as a settlement mechanism to the extent that it is used, I fear, often for illicit financing." It believes it is a highly speculative asset and is concerned about the potential losses investors could suffer. On the other hand, the leader of the US Treasury believes that the creation of a digital dollar could be beneficial to the US economy. A consumer protection issue on which the Central Banks are thinking and the Federal Reserve (Fed) are already thinking.
