The trend of product prices on the market in December 2020 was published this Friday, February 5, 2021 by the National Institute of Statistics (Ins).
In 2020, the inflation rate stood at 2.0% in Yaoundé, after +2.4% in 2019, +1.1% in 2018 and +0.8% in 2017. In Douala, it stood at 2.3% after +2.4% in 2019, +0.7% in 2018 and +0.2% in 2017.
In Yaoundé, the general price level rose by 1.4% after +1.6% last month. This year-on-year price change is largely the result of higher prices for food, furniture, household and maintenance items, among others.
In Douala, the INS noted an increase in the prices of clothing and footwear as well as food products, including fruits, oils and fats, fish and seafood. On the other hand, vegetable prices fell, mainly due to lower prices for pulses and oilseeds as well as tubers and plantain.
"Fruit prices have risen due to higher prices for citrus and other fresh fruit. The increase in the prices of oils and fats is linked to the increase in the prices of crude oils (crude palm oil), refined oils (refined cottonseed oil), and other fats (palm nuts). Fish prices are rising in line with the rise in the prices of fresh fish and frozen fish and other seafood (mackerel, captain, machoiron)," the INS note said.
