The new leader in gold production with a 20% stake for the Malian state
10% of which constitutes a free participation, organized a meeting with media men on the
summary of these actions in 2019 and these actions by 2020 at its headquarters in the city of Niger. The director
Country Mr. Mohamed Diarra was present, assisted by his collaborators.
The Canadian company B2Gold, which has been extracting gold from Fekola (southwest of the country) since 2017, plans to
reinject 50 million dollars to "modernize" its means of production and increase its output.
The Fekola gold mine officially entered into operation on February 3, 2018, will process by 2020 600,000
ounces of gold, mainly due to the expansion of the mining park, i.e. a production of more than 10 tonnes of gold
per year. It generates 1,896 jobs, 95% of which are occupied by Malians, of whom 60% are
nationals of Fékola or even Keniéba or even the Kayes region.
As part of the CSR, B2Gold resettled the village of Fadougou which was adjacent to the main pit of
Fekola, in an area of 110 hectares with 28 km of roads, 4 solar and 2 manual water pumps, network
of drinking water of 7 km, plus 700 structures etc. for a total amount of 50 million Dollar.Although the
resettlement of the village is not a requirement of the building permit, this resettlement project has been
decided by mutual agreement in consultation with members of the local community and the government.
This decision was made due to the proximity of the village to the mining site, the potential social risks and
the possibility of improving the well-being of the community. A resettlement action plan (RAP) and program
Resettlement-specific ESIAs have been developed and submitted to national authorities – in accordance with
international best practices.
A total of 3,272 people (913 households) have been moved to the new village. Achievements concern
also a school made up of 9 classrooms, a Cscom with a maternity room, a mosque, a
water supply system and a market.
Resources from gold account for 22.0% of total resources in the 2019 budget, i.e. an amount of
401 billion FCFA against 384 billion FCFA in the 2018 rectified budget. Gold resources are
split between tax revenue 374 billion against 355 billion in 2018 and non-tax revenue 27
billion against 28 billion in 2018.
Gold has been the leading export product for more than twenty years, far ahead of cotton and livestock on
foot.
The average annual production is 50 tons and the reserves are 658 tons, according to the National Directorate
Geology and Mining (DNGM).
