This was said Tuesday by Guinean President Alpha Condé during a videoconference held with his counterparts from countries with their own local currencies such as Sierra Leone, Gambia, Liberia, Ghana, and Nigeria.
In his speech on national television, the Guinean Head of State specified that Guinea's position is to respect the spirit of the 56th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS Presidents, that is to say to have "a basket of currencies and flexibility".
However, he said, this can only be possible if the 15 heads of state of the sub-region hold a meeting to speak with one voice about the common currency for the entire economic area.
"Sub-regional integration is fundamental for the development of West Africa," stressed President Condé.
He also urged the heads of state of the WAEMU (West African Economic and Monetary Union) to respect the decision taken at 15, during their last session.
According to him, it is obvious to Guinea that the eco remains the currency of the 15 ECOWAS states, with a basket of currencies and flexibility.
This gives hope, one day, to achieve a single currency for Africa.
President Condé concluded with these words: "Under no circumstances can Guinea join a monetary zone without the 15 states".
