The British Royal Navy patrol ship HMS Trent sets sail for the Gulf of Guinea to undertake security patrols and an Allied support mission in West Africa.
The deployment of the first Royal Navy ship to operate in the region in three years, aims to demonstrate the UK's commitment alongside the countries of the maritime zone. Once in the Gulf of Guinea, after a period of maintenance and crew rotation, the River-class patrol ship will visit Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Gambia and Cape Verde. It will participate in multinational training exercises led by the France, known as Exercise Grand African Nemo. HMS Trent will also participate in the Friends of the Gulf of Guinea (FoGG) G7++ conference in Dakar, which the UK is co-chairing with host Senegal.
HMS Trent carries on board a contingent of Royal Marines of 42 Commando, which will train partner forces from across the region in skills such as embarking and searching for suspicious ships, as well as evidence management and medical skills. The team is trained in boarding operations that will help combat illegal activities such as piracy, drug trafficking and terrorism.
