Senegal receives support for the management of household waste. The Board of Directors of the World Bank Group approved last Thursday a loan from the International Development Association (IDA) for an amount of 125 million dollars (approximately 74 billion Cfa). This fund is intended to support the country's efforts to strengthen and improve household waste management systems and services in Dakar and other municipalities.
The project, whose total cost should amount to approximately 295 million dollars (174 billion F Cfa), will be co-financed by the French Development Agency (Afd) and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development ( Aecid), with additional funding, notably from the Senegalese government and the private sector.
"Senegal has experienced rapid urbanization that is straining the ability of municipalities to effectively deliver essential services," said the World Bank's Country Director for Senegal in a statement. According to Nathan Belete, the launch of the National Waste Management Program testifies to the real will of the authorities to find a lasting solution to this situation.
The Board also reviewed the Project for the promotion of integrated management and solid waste economy in Senegal (Promoged), aligned with a new country partnership framework between the World Bank and Senegal for the 2020 budget years. to 2024. Promoged will increase access to waste collection and treatment services in areas that lack them.
“Some 5 million inhabitants in seven regions of Senegal will thus have access to improved waste management services, 5,000 people will benefit from training and all the municipalities will be able to benefit from more rigorous regulations and more efficient procedures to mobilize resources and forge partnerships with private companies", underlined Farouk Mollah Banna, leader of the project team at the World Bank.
“The project will also support the global initiative to combat marine pollution by improving the collection, transport, recycling and disposal of waste in several coastal cities as well as in urban centers located along the main rivers of the countries”, notes the correspondence of the World Bank.
