The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) of Kenya has On Thursday, January 29, initiated the mobilization of its drilling rigs towards Suswa geothermal field, marking the entrance of the site into the exploration phase active.

Kenya has established itself as a key player of geothermal energy in Africa, making this resource a pillar of its basic electricity. With Suswa, the GDC brings the number of fields to three operational geothermal systems under his responsibility, after Menengai and Baringo—Silali. The company believes that Suswa has an estimated potential at 300 MW. However, the development of the field must take place in phases, in based on exploration and drilling results, without a timetable for production announced at this stage.

The mobilization in Suswa comes as the geothermal energy plays a central role in Kenya's electricity mix, providing a significant portion of the electricity produced in the country. Thanks in particular to a strategy based on risk management upstream by the State, before the intervention of independent producers and lessors.
