In July, Ghana began talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of an aid package worth at least $3 billion.

This year, investors have abandoned the local currency, the cedi, with concerns about the global slowdown and demand for commodities such as cocoa, causing the currency to fall 38% and inflation to rise. As a result, the yields required to hold Ghanaian bonds in local currency according to Bloomberg indices have exceeded 34%, the highest within the "developing country" asset class. Discussions with the IMF and the resulting program are a key focus for investors.
