The Abidjan Initiative is an ambitious environmental programme to combat desertification that was presented by Prime Minister Patrick Achi at the start of the COP-15 summit. In this context, the government has asked for $1.5 billion, but the promises have exceeded and will all be invested over five years.

The government has mobilized more than USD 2.5 billion (XOF 1,533 billion) for the Abidjan Initiative, said the President of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Alain-Richard Donwahi, at the conclusion of the COP-15 summit in Abidjan on 20 May. Donwahi said that despite the fact that the investment mobilized is much higher than expected, the entire sum will be invested in the first five-year phase of the program.
