The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Tax Intelligence released its latest report on Africa on 26 May 2021. The document reveals that several billion dollars escape African states every year. Progress by African states towards tax transparency is still too slow. In its new report, the OECD points out that between $50 billion and $80 billion a year escapes African states. More than €34 million recovered in 2020 and more than €1.2 billion since 2009. These are the ringing and stumbling results, collected in the form of taxes, interest and penalties, of the fight against tax evasion on the African continent.
The report acknowledges that without capital flight, per capita income would be 1.5 per cent higher and the poverty rate almost two percentage points lower in Africa.

It should be noted that the OECD Global Forum, the African Union (AU) Commission and the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), which are jointly publishing this document, demonstrate the progress made since the launch in 2014 of an "Africa Initiative" to improve tax transparency on the continent. 32 countries and eleven partners, including the World Bank, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the AU Commission and the European Union.
