The South African rand was slightly weaker in early trade on Friday, catching its breath after a rally that saw it gain around 5% against the dollar this week. At 0625 GMT, the rand traded at 17.9550 against the dollar, more than 0.1% lower than its closing level on Thursday. The rand fell below 18 per dollar for the first time in three months on Thursday.

The Russian ruble strengthened, en route to its first weekly gain in more than two months, above the 90 mark against the dollar, supported by high oil prices and the easing of pressure from capital outflows. At 0725 GMT, the ruble was 0.2% stronger against the dollar at 89.92, moving away from last week's low of 93.85. It gained 0.2% to exchange at 100.79 against the euro. It strengthened by 0.1% against the yuan
