On Monday, the United States announced that it had imposed sanctions for corruption on senior Liberian officials. Among its officials is someone close to President George Weah. It is Nathaniel McGill, Minister in charge of Presidential Affairs and Secretary General to President Weah.

Indeed, Nathaniel McGill is accused, according to a statement by Ned Price, State Department spokesperson, of abusing “his position to undermine integrity and the independence of Liberia's democratic institutions (...) for personal gain.” Also, another separate statement from the Treasury Department states that in public contracts, he “received bribes.”

Aside from the minister in charge of presidential affairs and president Weah's secretary general, two other top officials are also sanctioned in namely Sayma Syrenius Cephus, Attorney General of Liberia, and Bill Twehway, head of the National Ports Authority.
