of 60 megawatts, Mauritania signed its first producer contract
300 million US dollars of independent electricity with Iwa Green Energy.
The Mauritanian project marks an important milestone in the desire of the Maghreb country to increase its electricity production thanks to private financing, while accelerating its transition to energies renewables. According to a press release from the African Development Bank (AfDB), the commissioning of this project, scheduled for September 2026, will increase the capacity installed from Mauritania to around 450 megawatts. According to Sid'Ahmed Ould Bouh, Minister of Economy and Finance of Mauritania, “this project with private actors testifies to their confidence in the will of Mauritanian government to diversify the production base and provide sustainable energy sources at the service of the economy”.
The project will contribute to the achievement of the goals
of the Desert to Power Initiative and the implementation of the Energy Compact of
the Mission 300 of Mauritania.
The Director of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency at the ADB,
Daniel Schroth, for his part, praised Mauritania for having crossed this
an important step in applying the Desert to Power Joint Protocol,
illustrating its relevance as a tool for accelerating the implementation of
IPP (independent power producer) projects in the Sahel.
