The Chairman of the Commission, H.E. Dr. Oumar Alieu Touray, introduced the report Annual report 2025 on the state of the Community before the sixth legislature of ECOWAS Parliament, chaired by H.E. Ms. Maimounatou Ibrahima, during a session held in Abuja.
The 2025 report offered a comprehensive overview of
developments, emphasizing a double face: notable advances in
economic integration and continued pressure in the face of critical challenges
regional stability. La
President Touray's presentation revealed the extent of the unresolved challenges. The
Regional Security sector remains the urgent priority. The situation requires a review and a
strengthening existing mechanisms to counter the expansion of terrorism and
cross-border instability.
Likewise, despite a reaffirmed commitment to the
Democratic Governance and Credible Elections, the Commission had to detail
its efforts in the face of the political upheavals that have affected some States
members. Parliamentarians actively debated these sections, asking
clarifications on the targeted interventions needed to ensure the
respect for the rule of law and accelerate the return to constitutional order there
where it was interrupted.
Despite this tense security context, the 2025 report put
in light of tangible progress in several fundamental areas.
In the area of Commercial and Economic Integration,
initiatives have made it possible to simplify border procedures and to
reducing non-tariff barriers, aimed at stimulating trade
intra-community.
Agriculture has also been a positive point, with
investments and programs aimed at modernising the sectors and
strengthen the food resilience of populations. The Health Sector
Publique saw the establishment of strengthened regional mechanisms for
disease surveillance and pandemic preparedness, an achievement
essential in a post-crisis world.
Finally, the Humanitarian Aid was detailed, testifying to the capacity of ECOWAS to mobilize resources to help populations displaced or affected by crises, emphasizing solidarity active and growing regional.
Transparency and Parliament's Call for Action
The members of the sixth legislature emphasized the need for greater transparency and accountability in the implementation of works on regional policies. Les parliamentarians unanimously called for targeted interventions and for a strategic reorientation of efforts to maximize the impact of funds communitarian.
