African leaders condemned the military-organized coup. At the end of the extraordinary summit this Sunday, the heads of state of the Community of West African States (ECOWAS) decided to suspend Mali from its bodies.

The Heads of State reaffirmed their commitment to democracy and condemned any actions that would taint the stability of the West African zone. Thus, they called for the appointment of a civilian Prime Minister and invited the transitional authorities to respect the electoral calendar that provides for the holding of democratic elections in 2022. They also called on the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) to support the transition process initiated in Mali.
