The Heads of State and Government of the member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are holding this Monday in Niamey, Niger, the 57th ordinary session of their organization.
According to the President of Niger, Issoufou Mahamadou, who will chair the summit, the debates will revolve around the political, economic and security situation in the region, including the situation in Mali, which has been the subject of two extraordinary ECOWAS summits.
On the agenda and in detail, ECOWAS leaders will consider, among other things, the reports of the 44th Ordinary Session of the Mediation and Security Council at ministerial level and the 84th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers.
Sources close to Nigeria, we learn that the one-day summit will deliberate on the special report on Covid-19 that will be presented by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, the one who was named ECOWAS Champion on the fight against Covi-19 at the extraordinary ECOWAS Virtual Summit on April 23 2020.
The Niamey Summit will receive a special report on the ECOWAS Single Currency programme. The report will be presented by President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone and Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ), and President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d'Ivoire, who chairs the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU).
Finally, the summit will examine the strengthening of democracy in some countries of the sub-region such as Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea and Niger where parliamentary and presidential elections are scheduled for this year. The strengthening of democracy in these countries will have to be accentuated by respect for constitutional provisions, the rule of law and the results of free and fair elections.
