The global environmental campaign organization, Mighty Earth unveils in its "Cocoa Responsibility Map 3.0", 47,000 ha of deforestation in the main producing regions of Côte d'Ivoire. Mighty Earth works to protect forests, conserve oceans and fight climate change. At the launch of its third update of the Cocoa Responsibility Map, the organization reveals that 47,000 hectares of deforestation has occurred in the cocoa-producing regions of Côte d'Ivoire over the past year. "Mighty Earth's new Cocoa 3.0 Responsibility Map reveals 47,000 hectares of deforestation in major cocoa-producing regions in West Africa," reports a statement from Mighty Earth from Washington, DC, dated February 18, 2021. The commitment of the government and the cocoa industry to achieve zero deforestation and to set up a joint monitoring mechanism under the Cocoa and Forests Initiative (CFI) is not yet bearing fruit. Data from the satellite-based Forest Disturbance Early Warning System shows nearly 70,000 hectares of forest disturbance in the world's largest cocoa-producing country. "The Cocoa Responsibility Map 3.0 builds on Mighty Earth's pioneering work to establish a joint monitoring mechanism for cocoa," said Samuel Mawutor, Senior Advisor at Mighty Earth. The Cocoa Responsibility Card 3.0 showcases cocoa supply chain research created by the Organization Trase, revealing international cocoa trade flows from Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire.
