Burkina Faso's legal framework has some flaws that do not promote an effective fight against money laundering and terrorist financing. For his Master 2 thesis, Criminal Law and Criminal Sciences option, Yassiya Giovanni Sawadogo looked into these imperfections.

Yassiya Giovanni Sawadogo focused his research on the "legal framework for the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism (ML/FT) in Burkina Faso". Before the members of the jury, on Friday April 30, 2021, at the University Institute for Initial and Continuing Training (IUFIC) of Thomas Sankara University, he argued that despite all the initiatives to fight against the scourge at the level both nationally and internationally, despite the high number of files transmitted by the National Financial Information Processing Unit (CENTIF) to the public prosecutor's office since the adoption of Law 016-2016, statistics relating to money laundering and the financing of terrorism in Burkina Faso are constantly progressing with almost no court convictions in this area. His work was sanctioned by the mark 15/20.
For the candidate, the Burkinabè legal framework for the fight against ML/FT is organized around a prevention and repression system in accordance with the rules of criminal policy. He argues that the Burkinabè ML/FT prevention system is based primarily on the fight against underlying primary offenses and on the application of universal and standardized measures. It suggests that, in addition to the legal framework for virtual assets, it is necessary to put in place a national banking policy in order to channel financial transactions for the integrity of the financial system.
