deciding to significantly relax its monetary policy.
The key rate, which determines the cost at which the
commercial banks refinance themselves with it, going from 25% to 17.5%,
while that of marginal lending facilities the rate applied in case of
urgent liquidity needs fell from 30% to 21.5%.
This technical adjustment is part of a
strategy to restore the Congolese franc (CDF) to a central place in
economic exchanges, in a country where more than 90% of transactions are
still denominated in US dollars. According to the official press release from the CPM, the
decision is based on a significant improvement in the macroeconomic framework.
Inflation, which reached 15.1% in September 2024, fell to 7.8% a
year later, while the national currency appreciated by around 11.6%
on the official market, around 2 548 CDF for one dollar.
The fall in the key rate theoretically makes CDF financing less expensive for banks commercial, and, by extension, for businesses and the State.
