In order to strengthen food security in Nigeria, the federal government provided on Tuesday, September 22, 2025 at 25 maize farmers in Edo State of inputs, herbicides and sprayers in order to increase food safety.

The initiative was led by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and targeted beneficiaries from of the state's 18 local government areas. Farmers have been trained on modern maize cultivation techniques, seed varieties, herbicide application, storage and marketing, among others topics.

According to Patricia Imade, Edo State Coordinator for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Safety, the program aligns with the deliberate efforts of President Bola Tinubu To improve food production, in especially maize. For her, the training follows a model of “training of trainers”, which means that the beneficiaries will replicate the lessons in their local governments and communities, eventually reaching hundreds of thousands of corn farmers across the state. She indicated that the distribution of hybrid, certified and fortified maize inputs aims to increase the yields per hectare compared to previous harvests.
